Petula Clark,作为70年代第一位女性摇滚人登上Billboard排行榜No.1的女歌手，其最著名的Downtown市中心是不可不听的一首佳作。旋律很有特点，虽然很亲切，但是总会使听者由衷落泪的感觉。这首歌更是在安吉丽娜朱丽和Winona Ryder主演的由苏珊娜卡森同名小说改编的"Girl,Interrupted"OST中作为主题歌。钢琴和管旋乐的配合,Petula Clark温暖且触动人心的演唱，足以使这首歌成为你情绪低落，徘徊时的最好鼓和安慰。

      1964年，在先后有许多支单曲轰动法国之后，她的唱片制作人汤尼海奇（Tony Hatch）带著一堆自己写的歌曲来找她，并且建议她，应该可以再度尝试用英语来灌录唱片了。佩屈拉克拉克回答说，她愿意回到英国发展，但前提是必须要先找到合适的歌曲。在她跑到厨房去泡茶来招待客人的时候，汤尼海奇随手在钢琴上弹奏了一段自己刚刚谱出来的旋律，她在厨房里听到了，立刻冲出来，问汤尼那是什么歌曲。汤尼表示，那首歌叫做「Downtown」，但是还没有歌词。佩屈拉说，那首歌曲很棒，假如汤尼可以写出相配的歌词，她愿意灌录，并且藉以回到英国歌坛。

       这首歌曲录制完成后，先是在英国推出，得到了第二名，接著又进军美国市场。过去，从1951到1962年间，早已在英国、澳洲、加拿大以及欧洲各地都相当有知名度的佩屈拉克拉克，曾经在美国推出过好些单曲，但是都不太成功。「Downtown」的推出，改变了一切。

      1964年的十二月十九日，这首歌第一次打进美国排行，获得第八十七名，随即开始急速的往上窜升，五个星期后，就在1965年的一月二十三日，夺得了美国的冠军，蝉联两周，使她成为摇滚年代以来第一个夺得美国冠军的英国女歌手。
